Anyone recommend one brand of insert vs. another? Don’t think I have the clearance for a regular stove. Any features that are a must have?

Ash drawer and flue connect.
I don't know about now, but some older units used to just slide in the openning and seal around the face flange and let smoke find it's own way into the flue. That can lead to various dangerous conditions. There should be a direct connection from stove flue to chimney flue.

Just a thought. Check your insurance policy to see if inserts are covered. Around here they are not.
