I would use heart redwood if I were you. I did a lot of trim work at my house in redwood and love working with it. You can oftentimes save money by buying carefully hand picked construction grade redwood if you know all of your dimensions in advance. The clear redwood grades become extremely expensive. I am currently planning to build a storm door with redwood to match my existing historic door.

There was a recent discussion of poplar for exterior use and several had good experiences with it for this purpose. I always prime all surfaces of whatever wood I use to make repairs with. If I really am worried, I coat the endgrain with epoxy.

Poplar would be one of your worst choices. Red cedar or pine is fine
