I am considering a hard-wood floor for my newly remodeled kitchen. Now, I have a few big dogs, and while they don’t go ripping through the kitchen on a regular basis, they do cruise through from time to time. Any thoughts on wood for this project?
Thanks, Darren

as long as you use a "Hard" hard wood your major concern will be the finish.
By Hard I mean maple or white oak or something that is at least as hard.
Doggie toe-nails will scratch up the finish very quickly, especially if there is 150# of Hound behind them!
My first suggestion would be a commercial finish, meant for high traffic areas.
maybe a gym finish.
There were a couple of flooring specialists posting here, If the new site hasn't got to them maybe they will chime in with some good products.
BIG DOGS RULE!!!!!!
Post a pic of your pups!!!
Hope this is of some help.

Do not try this at home!
I am a trained professional!
Mr. T is correct, not all hardwoods are "hard". Those dogs will destroy anything softer than Oak. I suggest maple or Brazillian cherry finished natural with "BonaKemi BonaTech Traffic" top coat. This product comes as two components, is clear and offers maximum scratch resistance.

I have seened the damage dogs can do to hardwood floor finishes. They can also scratch the wood but it is mostly the finish they damage. I would check with a paint store, maybe they have a spar that is hard enough to protect itself. Good luck with your project.

We have three young boys who do 4-wheel drifts around corners inside the house and there is a different look to the red oak floor finish.
I suspect dogs would do far more damage.
We have wood paneling in several rooms with doggie clawing marks under the windows. I'm guessing previous owners used to keep the dogs closed up in some of the rooms.
And I recall having to remove a felt pad thick layer of matted dog hair off the air conditioning grid in the duct that had frozen up solid at my parent's house. This also from previous owners who kept several doggies in the house...
As the co-owner of a number of large(er) dogs, all of whom live in the house, I can tell you that they will scratch up the finish on wood floors. The other issue is the sliding they will do when cornering and crashing into things. (It is pretty funny sometimes to see them go sliding past the kids . . .) I recommend carpet runners or area rugs to save your floor. Don't go with wall to wall carpet, the dust that gets kicked up is amazing and the cost of cleaning carpets several times a year gets trying.
