I was wondering if anyone on this board works for a stair co. I have for almost 10 years, if I was younger I’d go independent. If you do or have I’d like to hear some of your experiences.

How could it be, to many words spelled correctly!
Your right, Allen doesn't have any crawls on his hammer.Who Dares Wins.
They where all edit by the same person also.
Coherent and civil too...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming.... WOW!!! What a Ride!
he just did railing didn't he?
Yea I was just joshing. Let's not talk about it anymore. I don't want to kick up old ghosts.
edited to clarify: Yes he only did railing.

Allen,
What's younger???
I'm 54 and will be starting a new biz after 3 years of forced "vacation."

What's younger??? WELLLLLLLL I was thinkin younger than my 53.
But if I had a forced vacation........that would be a motivator.
Don't mind these guys.
Larry's only connection to stairs was at the newel posts.
So tell us more about working in a company instead of on the actuall structures. I bet it is more of a factory/corporate environment. Do you get to do some of the custom fancier stuff or mostly setup[s with housed treads?
Are you allowed to mention the company by name?

working for a stair co. is the same as working for myself except they handle the sales/material/customer relations/measure jobs/takeoffs and etc. I just show up and build stairs, mostly upper end. Not uncommon at all for a house to be in the 2mil range or more. If you just enjoy the craft it's a great job but sometimes when you do a really nice circle stairs or some nice custom work you feel like you should be getting more money.
Personally I really can't complain, just go to work get paid, go to next job. 10 years doin stairs and I've missed very little work.
I have mydays when i'd rather just work with the materials like that than to be interacting with cistomers, like the other day when a nive sixteen grand set of maple kitchen cabs stained to emulate the antique of the rest didn't please them. The work they admitted was unbelieveably fantastic, but the colour just didn't tockle the interior desitner's funny bone just right so she suggested painting them...

That's criminal--painting over nicely stained cabinets. Seems like there must be a better way--varnish with stain in it? Or colored lacquer? Anything but paint.
We are negotiating the issue still.

I haven't worked for a stair company, but I did work for a trim company in the late 80s, and all I did was stairs. No housed stringers, all site built, mostly off the rack stuff, about 30 sets a year for two years. I actually liked it until the boss started screwing up with the checks, made me go on my own real fast.
Now, I just mostly trim new custom houses. I still do the stairs, and the money is much better, when it's there. I also have to do all the sales, measuring, takeoff, schedualing, collecting, maintenance, procurement, cleanup, insurance, etc...sometimes I do think about the days when all I had to do was show up, but then I wouldn't have gotten to add all those other talents<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!
