OK. I’m completely grossed out. In the kitchen talking to the wife, I happen to look up at the ceiling and see a small dark spot. Thinking the kids must have thrown something up there, I go to investigate and find a small patch (about the size of a quarter) of worms.
Probably 20 of them, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch in length and probably no more then a few hair strands in thickness. You have to watch them for a few seconds to actually notice them moving. They are extremely small.
There was no food up on the ceiling previously, no water leaks of any kind and there is no break in the paint, so I can’t imagine where they came from or how they got there.
I wiped them up and through the tissue away. Anyone have an idea of what the heck these are???

for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. so if you got worm, that means trout for supper.
yup....

Sure they are not termites?
Baby maggots. Full of protein ... good when roasted over an open flame.

I guess they could be maggots, (I'm almost certain they are not termites) but does anyone know why they would grow on a clean surface and appear out of nowhere. At least termites (from my little experience with them) tend to leave a trail or a hole from where they came out of. . .I'm not aware of anything that could have died in the walls/ceiling (assuming that is one way maggots would get started). . .Anyone have any thoughts or experience. Should I be expecting more.

Thanks BarryE, that's them. Now that my wife won't go back into the kitchen, it looks like dinner is on me;-)

Now that my wife won't go back into the kitchen
How did you get her in there in the first place? We have no worms or the like and my wife still thinks the kitchen is a black hole.
I have seen termites that look just like maggots. But when I have seen them it has been in areas where it was moist. I rented a house years ago where termites ate the paper on the drywall and the paint started bubbling.
I read a story once about worms like that taking up residence in a mattress.
The owners could have sworn it was hair that was alive.
They ended up dead because while they would sleep, the worms would crawl right inside them through their pores and such, and eventually drained them of energy, etc...

Good one, Luka!
First, he's got a situation where his DW won't go in the kitchen, and then YOU come along with your gruesome little tale and now he won't be able to get her into the bedroom!
:-)
Reminds me of the episode in "Northern Exposure" when Maggie (the bush pilot) became obsessed with dust mites.

Have you ever seen a pic of a dust mite ?Gruesome little critters. And they are EVERYWHERE !!!In fact, there's probably about half a zillion of them crawling into your ears and nose right now !!!

Yeah, they are a bit gruesome....
In my Nose, you say?
You're ruining everybody's evening! :-(

I don't wear bedclothes and, thanks to you, I doubt I'll be going to bed tonight anyway....
Think I'll just sit out on the porch all night with my dogs and my backscratcher.....
My son recently had dozens of patches of these on the underside of his porch ceiling here in the Houston area. They are moth larve. They glue their eggs ( a hundred or so) on a patch about the size of a quarter. After hatching, they drop and crawl away (if outside). My son sprayed his with an insectcide before they hatched. Don't know what he used. A fogger probably would work inside.
