Went out yesterday and bought a harness and 75 ft of 3/4 nylon rope after reading some of yall’s posts. I did not want to spend the money on a harness, I was looking for a roofing nail gun. I got there and saw a harness and thought of your posts. Thanks

The day will come when you say thanks again and REALLY mean it!
The day when something happens while wearing it and you end up saying, "Whew! Im sure glad I had this thing on!"

I was helping with a 6/12 metal roofing job over a felted deck at about 35'.
We had no trouble walking until we stated the metal installation, whaich we had anticipated as SLICK.
We had kept the SIP panel fly-in rings and plates and attached them to the ridge. Added two rapelling ropes, harness and prussic knot loops.
I slid a lot, but I didn't go over the edge, but my buddy did....Twice...never made it to the ground either time. A little sore from the "jerk".

I always use chicken ladders on metal roofs

Broomball shoes make a world of difference on a metal roof
Not sure what broom ball shoes are? Curling?
I have found that the soft gum rubber in LL Bean boots is pretty darn good!

Broomball is kinda like field hockey played on ice, there are specially made shoes with very soft rubber soles to give traction on the ice. Work very well for traction on steel roofs as well

Did he replace anything after the falls? Both rip-straps and yo-yo's are supposed to be replaced after a severe enough impact. Some items have red indicators that become visible after a hard fall.
The soreness is usually a result of not getting the harness adjusted right. We just had safety classes last Thursday, and I learned that the lower leg straps are supposed to go horizontal and about where the bottoms of your pants pockets are. Straps should be tight enough that you can just get two fingers under them.

We were rigging with climbing/belaying/rapelling rigs since we both had used the knots and set ups in the rocks. My work partner, Rafi, weighs in at about 145#... not much impact...he's just a "jerk".
Worst part is the roof edge cuts the rope.....50 meter rope is about 10 meters shorter now...he was on his new rope.
Commercial stuff has some added goodies to indicate strain. as well as leg and chest harness... we change ropes after the fifth free fall or when the kernmantle is abraded, or after three years of use.
I've never saddled up an OSHA rig........Iron Helix

I've been laying carpet scraps on the places that might cut or abrade the rope. The safety class also recommends that.

I told my helper to start tearing some more roofing off while I finished the dormer. While I had my back to him he started in the middle of the roof instead of my end. Long story short, we had way more roof torn off than we could cover. The rain came about 6 hours early and it got very slippery while trying to cover it with felt paper. It was all we could do to stay on the roof. I was very happy to have a harness for my helper, I had to lay on my stomach and hold on to the rope. I went out and bought another harness kit (big box $269.00) tonight. I have done a lot of stuff with out safety equipment but figure I need to protect and teach my young helpers the right way. I also would like to grow old and still be able to walk and move.
