zip wall for home use

Hunter8it | Posted in General Discussion on January 6, 2008 05:12am

I would like to find a dust barrier product like the Zip Wall product, but would prefer one that can be permanently installed with zippers or some kind of quick install system. Does anyone know of a product like this?
Thanks.

I recently tried the Zip Wall brand zippers for the first time and I'm disappointed.  The zippers they sell at Home Depot are a lot better.  Wider flanges on the sticky tape and the hole in the flapper is nice to tie the shoe strings through for double zippered openings.

Probably not what yoiu're asking about, but I just thought I'd share the experience.

Ever wonder why "holistic" doesn't start with "w"?

If this is for a home shop, maybe  a curtain on a track. It would take seconds to close off an area.

It won't stop all but would be pretty good if there was some sort of negative pressure/ dust extraction/ air cleaner on the inside.

Can you be a tad more specific regarding its purpose?

When renovating my own kitchen, I framed a panel using 1 5/8" metal studs, an inch or so smaller than the entranceway. Wrapped it in 4 mil. poly, and adhered that foam pipe wrap all the way around the perimeter. Popped it in and out of the opening as needed.

The snug fit kept every dust particle contained.

It's for a home workshop in the garage, but I have to share it with household storage. I use a vacuum system but still lots of dust gets by. If I could seal myself into half the garage when I work it would solve the problem but a zip wall is too much work to put up and down evry time I use my shop for an hour.

i've made portable barriers using emt conduit before. works great and cheap too! don't waste your money on zipwall products if you plan on having a zipper in the wall.

Do you use the garage as a garage....for cars?

If not, could you build a partition wall dividing the space to suit needs? (With the intention of tearing it down should the time to sell arise.)

I don't use it for cars, but it is nice to have to open space. For example, if I have a removable plastic wall I can use the open space for finishing (after the dust settles) or glueing. If I separate it into two rooms permanently I won't have much working room. Also it would be nice to be able to drop the curtain or wall now and then when I am trying to feed an extra long piece into my table saw.

sounds like a couple of canvas painters tarps would work better for you, and last longer. just rig something to hoist them out of the way when not needed
