Credit for finding this gem goes to Andy Engel. He sent it to me awhile back as a two part email. The first photo is the clue – showing a whole lot of blackened fiberglass insulation near an air duct. Clearly a sign that air was leaking through somewhere. When I saw the second picture I was pretty shocked. Far more than a leak, I’m still trying to figure out how something like this happens? It looks like some piece of mechanical equipment was disconnected entirely and the ductwork was simply left to vent conditioned air into the attic.
