I was installing pre-stained sidewall shingles and needed a way to touch up my cut edges — but I didn’t want to risk spilling an open can of stain while working off of the roof. I found a plastic ketchup bottle in the client’s recycle bin, filled it about 1/3 full with stain, covered the mouth of the bottle with two layers of painter’s rag, and used a zip tie to secure it. By inverting the bottle and giving it a light squeeze, I could apply just the right amount of stain to the edges of the shingles without fear of spilling.
