We’re back at the Loctite® 2nd Chance House with Tyler Grace, who’s excited to start finalizing trim details on the home’s porch. Using Loctite PL Premium MAX® — Loctite’s strongest and most durable adhesive — Tyler applies moldings to exterior columns and installs a kickboard beneath the front door sill.
Here’s the Transcript:
Today we’re on the outside of the Loctite® 2nd Chance House on the newly restored front porch. I’ll be focusing my efforts on finalizing the trim details on these columns, as well as installing a kickboard beneath the sill on the new front door. For these applications, I’ll be using Loctite PL Premium MAX®. Let’s get to work.
The first application is these applied moldings on the columns. We selected the 1 and 3/8-in. ogee-style base cap. The next step was to figure out what size looks best based on the style of the home and the size of the columns. Then we used some gauge blocks to mark out all of our lines.
To install them, we used a small 3/8-in. bead of the adhesive on the back and the moldings. The goal is to use a minimal amount of fasteners, and that small continuous bead alleviates any potential squeeze-out. To finish the top of these columns, we selected a 3-in. baseboard that matches the trim Habitat already installed on the bottom.
The ceiling is slightly out of plane, so we ended up scribing the tops of these. Then I applied a 3/8-in. zigzag bead of adhesive to the column rather than the back of the trim because I wasn’t really concerned with any squeeze-out. The goal here is to have a strong, durable, weatherproof bond with minimal fasteners until the adhesive cures.
Updating the Door
For the final application, we’re installing this kick plate underneath the front door threshold. We chose Loctite’s most durable product for this application because it’s going to hold up to the abuse that this door is going to get with people entering and exiting.
I can also install a really thick bead as a wet shim, so if there are any voids or inconsistencies on the sheathing or behind this board, when I drive the trim screw in, it’ll serve as backing, solid support, and that piece of lumber won’t pull in with the screw. PL Premium MAX® is Loctite’s strongest, most durable adhesive. That’s why it’s a great product used in these exterior applications, which will be exposed to the elements.
