Sam Maloof's House

A dean of American woodworkers has been tinkering with his house for 40 years

Unfinished roughsawn redwood boards sheathe the exterior of the Sam Maloof house. Enveloped in trees, the house fades into the background as views through clerestories, light-wells and overlapping windows focus on the foliage. The interior was built to showcase the owner's woodworking and the family's collection of art and crafts.

Update: On May 21, 2009, legendary woodworker Sam Maloof died at his home. Visit FineWoodworking.com to view a special collection of articles, interviews, and a listing of the career highlights of this amazing artist.
