A top down view shows the elegant curve carving through the practical rectangular island.
The islands curve shares a common radius point for the curves of the booth display shelf and kitchen table.  The implied circle makes a central hub for the kitchen and family area.
The glass top matches the working height of adjacent counters.  The wood sub-top matches the height of the adjacent kitchen table.  The spacious shelves make an elegant serving dish display as well as revealing the full impact of the blue curving surface.
An open cookbook can be placed under the glass, protecting it from the mess of food preparation.
The angled front door on the working side of the island resolves the meeting of practical storage to the curved cherry face.  It provides access to a small vertical slot for cookie sheets and cutting boards.

This narrow island is not large, but it works hard at the center of the kitchen.  A practical rectangular shape is really part of a larger circular composition that includes the adjacent eat-in booth and table.

The glass worktop, set at counter height, “disappears” to fully reveal the circular plane carving through the island.  The wood sub-top, set at table top height, provides a great cookbook station protected from the messiness of food preparation.  The curving blue surface brings out the curve visually.  Had this been cherry, it would have been visually lost.  The sub-top extends beyond the glass to provide a display shelf…a wonderful place for flowers when entertaining.

A combination of open shelves and closed cabinets provides functional storage and serving dish display.  An angled door on the working side of the island reveals a narrow cabinet for cookie sheet storage.  It is a whimsical detail that always garners attention from guests.
