Builders routinely crown their rafters and joists, but I don’t know many who crown their studs as well. That’s too bad because there are a couple of benefits. First, because each stud is looked at with a critical eye, the really bad ones are rejected for use in less critical places. Second, with all the crowns pointing in the same direction, you don’t get a wave in the wall where studs with moderate crown alternate in and out. This condition is especially apparent on walls with chair rails or cabinets on the inside, and those with hardboard siding on the outside.
