Plastic sheeting is a big help for controlling dust in a remodeling project. To hold it tight to the ceiling, my crew and I use a 2×2 with padded carpet scraps stapled to the top. As shown in the drawing above, we drill holes in the underside of the 2×2 that are large enough to insert 1-in. PVC pipes. The pipes are 6 in. longer than the ceiling height. The “spring” of the pipes keeps the 2×2 and the plastic firmly in place against the ceiling. We orient the curve of the pipe away from the workspace, making it a little roomier on the business side of the plastic.

Good tip, but an easier approach today is to install a ZipWall system. I carry a kit with 8 poles, tape, plastic, and zippers to create quick barriers on any remodeling project.
