Understanding consumer interest is good for business. The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Home Design Trends Survey, which used data from the second quarter of 2015, showed homeowners are investing in outdoor living spaces and that there has been a sharp increase in interest in adding technology and systems that can help automate energy consumption. Special function rooms also ranked highly on the survey.
According to the study, which surveys over 500 architecture firms that concentrate their business in residential design, outdoor living areas, home offices and mud rooms remain the most popular special function rooms. Energy efficiency and home automation options remain popular choices for home technologies and systems.
AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. stated that “With the tremendous interest in well-designed outdoor living spaces, it’s a pretty strong indication that the days when houses were viewed as a way to flip for a big profit are long gone. Signifying a renewed interested in practicality and use, demand for mud rooms and dedicated guest rooms are also quite high.”
