After 16 years as a staff editor at Fine Homebuilding I’ve decided it’s time for a change. As of August 1st, I’m leaving my full time dream job to chase a dream of building a new remodeling business: Fink & Son. As many of you know, Erin and I had a son in March of this year, and although I certainly don’t intend to steer him into a life in the trades if that’s not what he wants to do, I do feel inspired to launch Fink & Son in his honor. I want to do my part to help save all the old houses, and bring more of the high performance construction learnings to projects in my region. I’ll be proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the many current and future tradesmen and tradeswomen making their livings with this craft as a career path. But most of all I want to hopefully make my wife and son proud. With such a great stock of old houses here in CT my goal is to focus my work on the renovation and repair of late 19th century and early 20th century residential homes, but I imagine there will be a healthy dose of other carpentry and woodworking projects in the mix, too. For those of you I’ve worked with at FHB, including editors and authors, I can’t thank you enough for all the creativity and knowledge we’ve shared over the years. Rest assured that I plan to be very closely associated with FHB and GBA going forward as “Builder at Large”, so you can still expect to see me on the regular. If not on your jobsites with a video camera in tow, then at least on the @finehomebuilding youtube channel and in the pages of the magazine! #keepcraftalive
