1.25″ countersink around a .5″ hole?
OK, say I’ve drilled some 1/2″ holes thru a beam for 1/2″ thru bolts, but then on the other side, I want to drill some 1.25″ holes to put a plug over the thru bolt heads .. anyone got any tricks for doing this?
I suppose I could put a 1/2″ dowell into the hole, so I could at least start a 1.25″ forstner bit for the countersink, then I could tap the dowell out the other side.
This is assuming I can’t drill the countersink first ..

Joe, drill your 1.25'' hole through a scrap pc of ply. Tack or clamp the scrap onto the beam. Drill on, the scrap will hold your bit. Registration will be the hard part, but probably not for you.

Put it in your back pocket for later. When you run up against those old "small" bores for locksets and you wonder how to redrill for 2-1/8''. A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Joe,
If this is something you do regularly, and I bet you probably do, you should invest in few of W.L. Fuller's type-B or type-X counterbores. We used them a lot at the boatshop and they drill very clean holes. Available in many sizes up to almost 3" and each size can be ordered to fit different drill bits or regular steel rod if you have already drilled a hole.

hhmm, I'll have to read up about those bits Vander.Say, is Lost Wages really a towns name? In Nevada I could believe it!
One time I was ferrying a helicopter across the West and my fuel go-no go-point was Truth or Consequences, NM. Figured it was an omen.
Joe,
It's slang for LAs Vegas, but we're actually in San Diego now. I need to update the profile I see...
Definitely look into those bits, I'm sure someone in town carries them. Fuller will also send you a free catalog. I think their website is http://www.WLFuller.com.

Lolll!!I even went to Map Quest, and put in Lost Wages, Nv.!Jokes on me ..
To do this if the hole have not been drilled yet...
Start with a 2.25" spade bit on the side you want the counterbore.
Drill to the depth you require for your counterbore.
Now get your .5" bit out and drill that hole through the center of the counterbore.
