Get this, in a town the size of Boise non of the major lumber yards stock kd 4×4 posts. When asked they say they can’t even get ’em unless they buy a bunk so don’t even ask. Strange.
The engineer we have been using has the hots for 4×4’s in interior walls when transmitting second floor loads, which is a pain because we’ve been having to use green posts.
Then wandering down the isle at home depot what did I see but a stack of #2&btr kd posts, with some almost knot free #1’s with near perfect tight grain for $10 a shot. After high-grading the pile of the knotless ones I had to think how crappy is that if the only place to pick up something that’s used so much is at HD?

When they say "You can do it, we can help" I guess they mean it. Conversly, I was in dire need of some 1.25 inch PVC elbows to finish plumbing a sump pump. HD was only 10 minutes away, my regular plumbing supplier was 30 minutes away. So I decide to go to HD, waste 15 minutes looking for a stray elbow, waste another 10 minutes looking for a guy in orange, who wastes another 5 minutes looking in the same empty bin as I did and proclaims "we must be out of them". Drive 30 minutes to my regular place, get what I need. I'd mention your needs to your yard guy, and the fact that HD stocks them. Maybe they'll have some next time you need them.

For some reason, every lumber yard manager looked at me like I'm an idiot asking for kd posts!
Truth be told, the quality of the last load of dimentional lumber to HD was far better than normal, so I'm thinking it was more a fluke of the distributor having too much good wood and needing to make room rather than good planning. HD also had a few bunks of stud grade white pine that were clear, and I mean no knots what so ever. Can't remember the last time a clear stud passed through the bed of my pickup.
The better lumber from this week's shopping trip are now inside to finish drying for some finish projects this fall and next spring.

Maybe it's the new management at the top? Hard to believe but maybe...
Was in HD not too long ago and the HD employees who wouldn't even look at me while I was there 6 mos ago were tripping over themselves to see if I needed any help. WTF? I'm so jaded against HDs employee performance (these in particular) that I think I was a bit unfair with my reactions to their questions. Haven't been in there since but maybe something's changing? Not that I have high hopes for them or really care...
Then again it might just be a fluke.
