I have a small (12×20) deck project in mind and was originally considering using 5/4×6 ipe deck boards. However, I found a source for recycled 1×6 redwood boards for about 25 cents a linear foot – about 1/10th the cost of ipe.
The redwood is 50-year old 1×6 t&g interior paneling – vertical grain, clear, about 16 growth rings per inch. All heartwood. Very nice stuff.
Any reason this would not be an appropriate decking material as long as I frame my joists 12″ o.c.?
Would it be foolish to install it as t&g with a slight pitch instead of ripping off the tongue and spacing the boards? Would eb-ty fasteners work with 3/4 thick boards?
Thanks for your advice.

With redwood like that I'd find an interior project for it. It will definitely die faster is you install it as T&G... I'd go with 3/16" gaps or even larger.
Even at 12" o.c., I would not be comfortable with 3/4" thick redwood decking. No way. And the water between the boards has to have an escape route. Doesn't matter if there is a slope or not, unless the slope runs parallel to the boards. The whole thing sounds wrong to me. Just my opinion.

I believe you could do ALL of the above. Personally, I am uncertain whether 1x6 would not cup some if ya went T&G. I'd be inclined to waste the edges and space them or just remill the T&G on the slightly narrower board that have fresh edges.
When you say recycled interior paneling, I envision ragged edges from the uninstall.

I have laid 1x6 cedar on 16" ctrs and it's tolerable...hardly more than you'd expect, and as stiff as 5/8" subflooring (!). 12" o/c would do...but it's almost sacrilegious to use such good stuff! Don't lay it as t&g, tho.
cheers

ebtys work fine on 3 / 4 material
unless you have a roof over the deck and can keep a glistening look to that redwood it may be a pity to lay it down
whatever you do w/ it you'll see 2nd growth or virgin VG redwood even at 1 X 6 is very strong, durable material
