2D CAD

| Posted in General Discussion on February 7, 2005 11:14am

Time to get a new cad program.  I have AutoCad LT on one pc but cannot find the software, and don’t want to spend the money for a new version for the laptop.  I have Chief that I struggle with for 3D, but it sux at 2D.  I have seen comments here about Sketchup and TurboCad.  Sometimes I just want to draw an accurate 2d sketch or drawing.  Looking for advice.  Drawing compatibilty between Chief and AutoCad LT and the new program is not an issue.

I’m sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

I'm using Sketch for most things these days, it has some 3d functions, but for 2d it is a standard program. It'll likely open all your LT files and you can drop in Jpegs...

have cad 2000 but it is just too tedius-too many buttons and each one folds out into another 15-must take months to set up for a drawing.

For 3d and all advertisements I use Illustrator-love that program, but it takes a beast computer to run it. I've made single page files too big to fit on a cd.

Bought a copy of Coreldraw, but haven't made heads or tails of that yet.

      Boe,

You may already know this but after you create the file, rasterize it, and save that copy.  The only reason you would need the original is if you are making changes.

...but it is good to run with at least 500m of ram, a video card with 128 or higher on board ram, and good Athalon processor.  Oh and 4-5 fans helps.

2g ram, 256 vc, 2800 processor... with intel p4...I think there is 4 fans in it(two are about 4")...but it doesn't throw that much heat. It choked on a virus once... but aside from that I don't remember it crashing ever. Often I'll have cad, illustrator, photoshop and photoshop album up and running... Now you've done it... going to have to test this thing to see what crashes it! (going to get the fire extinguisher and I'll try it out... BRB)

You do some graphics stuff Zendo?

I do tend to leave them full size because most of the magazines I work with will want to edit them on their end...they tend to give them the final proof for me.  (good to have friends).

        Be Well,

Yeah a little Maya and Max.

Now I see you gut plenty of juice its the applications opened.  I cant run either aforementioned with other apps. open, I think Max closes automatically.. cant remember, always play by the rules. lol  Can you compress or Codec?

I would have to argue with Intel though, never again.  Im AMD all the way.

Why do I swing a hammer and sling a paintbrush?

You might want to look at Intellia Cad.

    http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_Main.Entry?SP=10007&SID=36935&CID=0&DSP=0&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=0

    It starts at $149

It started out life as an Autocad clone and was spunoff to developement group.

And here is a company that has it along with an arch add-ons.

Here is a list of all of the companies that produce version of IntelliCad and add-ons.

And here are some free ones.

I've used TurboCad, even beta tested for them.  Then I switched to AutoCad LT.  If you've used LT, you won't be able to stand the more labor intensive Turbo user interface, so fuggedabout Turbo.

See if you can get Cadkey 97 on eBay.  Or Cadkey LT.  I've seen CK 97 go for $300 or so.

CK 97 gives you some pretty good rendering capabilities, and it is a very capable 2D sketcher.

I've got Cadkey 97, and it works well for me.

If I did not have anything, I might be tempted to get Sketchup.
