I am installing 3/4″ prefinished hardwood flooring. In the hallway there is a wood base supporting a 6 foot banister which runs parallel to the direction of the 3″ planks. Can I run the flooring all the way to this wood or should I leave a gap to allow for expansion? The two surfaces are coplanar once the flooring is installed. The width of the hallway is 38 inches along this 6 foot banister and there is a 3/4″ expansion gap at the other side of the hallway.
Calvin………still plugging along and it looks great so far.

You should be able to run right up to it. With such a narrow area, there will be minimal expansion/contraction and a space at one side is fine.
Sorry for the delay. Thanks for the information.
I agree, this situation is a rule-breaker
