3 hinge Door hinge template usage for 4 hinges
Upon recommendation from a post on this forum, i purchased a used Rockwell hinge template set. Came with three templates, not knowing how to use it, i was hoping to use it for 4 hinges on each door. i didnt realize how to use it til i got it & realized i shouldve got one for use with 4 hinges. anyone know if it can be utilized for 4 hinges? seems like it should be able to be re-positioned to get the 4th one done??

Been a long time since I used the jig but,
I’d lay out the 3 with knowing where I’d like the fourth to go.......on the jamb.
(Same distance between 4 and 3 and 2 and 1)
Do the top 3 then drop down the jig one hinge mortise (registering to a previous hinge cut ) , secure and mortise the 4th.
When doing production hangings we’d locate the top of the top hinge 5” down from top of door, the bottom hinge 7” up to the bottom of the hinge......
i just checked it out, it looks like the jig can be set up to do what you described, kind of complicated to get it set up though, through trial & error. since these are going to be carriage doors, it looks like i will have to reconfigure the jig for the other door & jamb...
i have another existing entry door that i need to replace the jambs, how do i register the jig to the existing door to be able to route the new jamb? thanks again
Jim.
I would think I would use the old jamb to gauge the layout, if the fit of the door was good. Make up the new jamb to be the exact replica of the old.
If the fit wasn’t that hot, just figure from top down adjusting for the gap at the top......set the rest of the hinge templates according to the door layout. After the top hinge the others are what they already are on that door.....
Remember, it’s been years since I productioned with that setup.
i didnt get notification of your post, so i just noticed it as i was going to post my possible solution, but i have to say, after tinkering with the jig & thinking about it for a week or so myself, after reading yours, i think i like your solution better, i will have to see if the jig templates are slotted for doing that. otherwise i came up with laying out the top 2 hinges & then lowering the 2 template assy down to the bottom of the door/jam & routing those. i appreciate your feedback again, i didnt get any notifications, so i thought i stumped every one. in the meantime, i located a 4 hingle jig, used but brand new for $125 4 hours from me. he is checking on shipping cost, & then i would resell the 3 hinge i have. but i think between these 2 possible solutions, i should be able to just keep the 3 hinge one i bought used for $100. i have other doors to do after these carraige doors that the 3 hinge jig will suffice.
Glad to hear it. No notification, nothing to alert you to a new post unless you watch the clock, having to scroll down past other posts to get to a recent, and the list goes on.....
All the things and more that drove a lot of talent away from here.
No kidding, progress?
Best of luck in all you do!
