I am looking for a decent HVLP, Not the best most expensive. I want to apply stain and clearcoat with it. Any recomendations? There is a ton on Ebay, but many dont have a brand name and Im unsure if they are junk or good.

Do you have a compressor that can handle a high cfm?
I have a craftsman 25gal compressor.
For HVLP conversion guns, you need at least 10 CFM at 50 PSI. True HVLP set ups that have their own turbine put out 8-10 PSI at 100-200 CFM. If you opt for a conversion gun, make sure you have a dessicant dryer and a good micron filter inline between the gun and compressor. The air from the compressor has too much water and when it condenses on expansion, it will mess up your finishes.

Same here the black thing (cast iron), $500 give or take a few, works well ,it does a good job. has that big engine perched on top, so far 6 years it's dependable handles the cfm, but have learned the better the gun the better the finish (just because of the finer tuning points and versatility). An extra hundred bucks makes the diffrence.another point i learned was conversion guns are easier to clean than the cup guns, that alone won me over to the conversion guns.

I am betting that this machine only puts out about 3-4 feet. They put the big tank on as a reservoir to help make up for small flow rate, but painting is something that would draw that down too quick.but you ccan check your literature on it.

I have been told by someone who should know that one of Harbor Freight conversion HVLP guns is pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't remember which one... However, he painted industrial equipment, so don't know how it would be for other things.
I use a couple of them from Harbor Freight, on sale around 70 bucks, work way better than they should. I have had one for about five or six years and got another one just like it in case the first one died--I did not expect it to last but it has.
Thanks,
I saw one at Lowes that seemed well built. It has a 1000cc cup, and a regulator at its base. I think it was $90ish. Im sure its made by someone eles, like maybe Devillibis?
they have one at harbor freight... that is the gun hose and air pump... it's blue... and usually on sale for under $50 maybe less...
it's worth $300... i've used one up they replaced it free and i sprayed well over 100 gallons with it...
the hose is maybe 5ft... but the air pump has a starp that goes over your shoulder... you just pull the power cord around behind you...
the gun ain't bad... easy to adjust and easy to clean... will spray as fine as you'd like... just about down to airbrush zone.... up to about a 10" pattern with a thinned industrial enamel i use on my steel work (primer & finish coat)
i'd have been pleased if it did 20% of what it does...
btw i had a $600 professional unit when they first came out... think it was devillebliss (sp)? I wasn't pleased with it...

Is this the one you are referring too?
Think it would work for spaying paint on baseboard and casing before it goes up?

I get one from HF that looks like the Cambell Hausfeld? from HD, it is regularly used for spraying oil on baseboards, cabinets--even a huge brick fireplace one time. Works extremely well, now that one of the guys has put his stamp of approval on the blue HF unit, I will get one of those as well.I also paint cabinets and trim with latex, thinned with a paint extender or water--works good and the finish is good. When you use it for the first time and every time thereafter you will say to your self, this can not be.

yep thats is the one...
it will not (as far as i know) not spray latex... mine sprays the Killz oil based primer fine... mostly i use it for industrial type oil paints & red oxide primers... as long as you can thin it to where it flows thru the cup provided... it's been my experience that it will spray it.... and.... the air pump without the gun works well to blow off dust before painting...

Hey, thanks for the heads up that the blue HF HVLP was an OK tool.
I have alot of spray equipment but never pulled the trigger on a hvlp - maybe because I had so many other options.
I was in HF yesterday, and had a coupon for the blue sprayer, for $30.
Because you said it was ok, I went ahead and got it, actually had a small project in the shop last night and used it.
What a great little unit. We both know it's not the highest quality, but for little projects, I can see it being my go to unit. And for $30, instead of 1500 for a cap spray it doesn't owe me anything after just one project.
Thanks for the heads up.Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City
cool deal... sometimes... cheap is not so bad... i use it without the gun to blow off dust before i paint.... and for spray'n industrial /metal primer and industrial enamel on ironwork where everything i'm usually spray'n is under 4" wide... it works...
i've burned up one unit (took maybe 50-100 gallons of spray'n to do it) but they replaced it no questions asked...

Check out the EARLEX Spray Station Pro, for 300 bucks its a great buy.
I had a Fuji Q3 Pro, about $450.
Great turbine, nice gun.
Sent it off to a Breaktimer in need a few years ago.
Accu-spray with the Carbon fibre body and stainless steel guts is what I like, water based coatings won't affect the guts like it will in steel bodies, and the Carbon/Graphite gun body won't get as hot as a steel body ( to the hand that is).
I refer to the turbine type, not conversion. They can get pretty uncomfortable if you are spraying ALL day, but that heated air really can boost a WB finish both flow out and cure in some conditions.
But you want less expensive, I just threw this out for anyone looking to go higher up on the pro scale.

see i knew there was something about you that was social redeeming :>)Yep go for the accuspray. love it wouldnt own anything else.Mines is a versa max conversion gun ..can spray it all day using a 2 gallon emglo.
also you can get a 2 1/2 gal pot for it if you want one that will run off the same 2 gall emglo...In fact Im using mine today to spray some drawers using unthinned w/b poly no problem. Isn't anyone gonna say what we all best be thinking?- Hank Hill

I don't know how much spraying you have to do, but I've had good luck with this cheap siphon gun. Sprayed a couple hundred cabinets with it. Everything laquer to latex.
$49.99$39.99 2 Used & new from $34.99It's not too late, it's never too late.
I just checked my compressor. I puts out 9.1 CFM at 40psi. This should be enough air to use a conversion HVLP.
One of the other magazines just gushed over Apollo's new AtomiZer gun. It is supposed to work as either a conversion gun or run off any turbine.http://www.popularwoodworking.com/articledisplay?id=14856$350 street price.
This one has done me well in limited use so far. I've had no trouble spraying doors or trim with it. I'm a carpenter not a painter so YMMV.
