The exterior of a house you mean? as in window placement and trim, banding, etc...Or the landscaping?
The exterior sort of relies on what's going on inside the house ("form follows function" and all that), but you might just get some books out of the library on "architectural styles" and those will have lots of pictures of exteriors. Regardless of what's going on inside the house, the overall style of the house can be "Italianate Villa" or "Victorian" or "Queen Anne" or whatever. May be a starting point to give you ideas.
