I remember reading an article on AAV’s in the October/November ’05 issue of Fine Homebuilding. The cost for the small unit in the article is approx. $25.00.
My local lumber yard sells an ABS unit for $4.00 called an “auto vent”. It is a B&K trap vent 995-001. Is this $4.00 unit appropriate to use as an AAV for a sink, or a shower, or a tub?

Thank you.

This might help you. An AAV is designed to only let air in not water out. If this piece does the same thing i'd go for it. The worst thing that will happen is the inspector will say no and you screw on a AAV in place of the other unit.
Actually the most important function is to keep air from comming out; ie release sewer gases.
Yeah, guess I glossed over the whole "keep the house from smelling like sewer" thing.
So, basically as long as its a one way breather he should be good.
