I need help to create a roll in type shower stall in place of an existing bathtub alcove. Question is do I cut the floor joist down? If so how far? And is this better than building up the existing floor as far as wheelchair access and long term maintainence?

Cut the floor joist? My first inclination is to answer with a hearty, "No!" But then I realise you haven't supplied enough information.
For example, are you thinking you need to lower the shower floor? How big is the shower stall? Is it adjoining an exterior wall?
