Adding a second level to a house
I am renovating a farmhouse and interested in adding a second story to it. I think I can figure my way around the project, but what I’m wondering is what specifically do I need for engineering to determine the ability for carrying the new load. The first floor is currently 7 foot sidewalls with vaulted throughout. I would also like to bring the first floor up to 9 foot ceilings then add the second deck and 8 foot walls in the new upstairs. Aesthetically I may end up with short side walls and make it a story and a half. I have free reign in the basement, the existing house is a modular. Any thoughts on past experiences would be greatly appreciated to get the questions and answers flowing.
Thanks

You need to detemine whether the foundation can adequately support the proposed addition. The type of soil that your farmhouse is now sitting upon, plus the size and shape of your house foundation are the major factors in play here. Stud size and spacing, is also a factor, but much less than your actual foundation
Contact an architecht or engineer, or even a reputable contractor in your area that has a lot of experience in this type of work, to come out and visually inspect your property and let them give you their evaluation...then you take it from there. The few bucks you spend for their time is money well spent...period.

An architect or an engineer.
