anchors for adobe wall

BruceT999 | Posted in Construction Techniques on October 1, 2006 06:43am

I have to put up furring strips on the walls of a 60-year old adobe garage.

I think adobe is probably way too soft for Tapcons, so some kind of expansion anchor seems to be needed, but I don’t know if plastic anchors would get much bite and I think redheads would probably crack those unfired bricks.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Did you consider just gluing the furring strips with construction adhesive?  Plastic anchors could be used to hold it while the glue sets.

It's really hard to fasten to adobe. Try predrilling the strips and using long deck screws (no pre drilling the adobe), say 3 or 3.5 or 4 inch screws, or even 5 or 6.  If a short one strips, switch to a longer one in the same hole. Low RPM, push like heck, one smooth movement

If I was furring a whole wall for drywall, I would consider just building a wall in front w steel studs. Good luck.

Thanks guys, that makes two votes for deck screws. I'll give them a try. I wonder if DeckMate offers an adobe-colored version? :)BruceT

i've worked on one sun dried mud brick house and we used deck screws.

    held surprisingly well.

You didn't say why you were attaching strips to the wall. Drywall?

Anyway, deck screws will work if the adobe is in good condition.

    Predrill your strips, don't over-torque.
