Ok Ok, just inquiring minds want to know but no big deal….
Say yer going to put in a black pipe gas line and you want to put a union in there.
Does it make a difference which end of the union goes where in respects to upstream on downstream or is it just a personal preference?
Replies
Hi
It should not matter which side the union goes (upstream or downstream). But what will make a diiferance is which side the loose coupler is located.
For Example, a vertical pipe should have the loose end on top so it is easier to thread. The location the union is in may also determine the oreintation of the union.
ps. does anybody know how to use the spell check, my browser keeps saying error on page.

Sorry KZ- only one dumb question permitted per thread. :o)
Thanks for the reply.
Could it be that it keeps saying error because you made one? (look in the second sentence)
Yeah, but if the spell checker tells him there's an error but won't show him where it is, it's not working.
Depending on the time of the day, the mood of prospero, etc. I found spell check a hit and miss. Try using an updated browser or use another browser.
Also better check code -- Here you're not allowed to have a union in a gas line inside the house.

Hello,
You mention that in your area you can't put a hidden union in a wall in a black iron natural gas line. I've got this problem now - and I'm wondering what to do. Do I have to repipe from where I cut the pipe all the way to the end of the gas pipeline on the other side of the room? Another option is for me to expose the union inside of the closet - is this ok, to your knowledge (or anyone else's) in the UPC or California Plumbing Code? I live in Los Angeles.
Thank you.

Hi Duke,
I am in NorCal where I assume we have similar codes.
I would recommend you arrange a meeting with your local building inspectors to see what they advise. By doing this, you have a much greater chance of passing inspection because they always appreciate people trying to do things correctly. Here, ours are usually very knowledgable and helpful, in regards to questions from HOs and others.
Good luck,
