Greetings all:
I have seen ads for the Tamarach HV1000 whole house fan in the back of the magazine for months and have been tempted to buy one. I have a two story split level home in Ohio and would install it in the ceiling at the top of my stair landing. Has anyone purchased one of these fans and if so, what are your comments on the performance of it? Does it really make a noticeable difference in inside temperature at night when it cools down outside, but residual heat indoors and in the attic keeps indoor temperature high?
Thanks for any input.

I've used whole house fans. They really work well. Be careful with the installation- try to isolate the assembly from the framing to surpress sound transmission.
Can't speak to the Tamarack...but heck, it just moves air! It is not possible to have a thermally efficient fan, when it is sucking fresh air in. I will grant you that when off, the Tamarack seems to have a system which trys to maintain the insulation at the ceiling. Don't know what it costs, but run the numbers out however many years you'll be there.
I've gotten top quality fans from Graingers.

*Fred,That particular wiring system is to accommodate the lighted switch, I presume. What about noise? No, not the fan...the furniture hitting the walls as it's sucked upstairs.

B.C. I agree with everything that Fred just mentioned. I have installed many of these types of fans and have one in my own home. I have a large home and I can cool the whole house down 10-15 degrees in less than 1/2 hour. You should be aware however, that these are not a substitute for air conditioning if you live in a climate where it is humid when it gets hot. In this case, all it does is suck cooler, humid air into your house at night. If that is your situation, I would save up for an air conditioning system.
