anyone use a cell phone repeater
here i live in the middle of a big city and can’t get good reception on my phone. i have altel, which is shooting off a sprint tower. i can go 750′ east or west and no problem, been all over the country no problem, but here i sit at home and it won’t work.
so i’ve been looking at repeaters, some cost 15.00 i would guess they are worthless. some are in the 200 -300 range and sound like they work.
my contract is up and i’m cell phone /carrier shopping,i’d rather have a root canal.

Cell repeaters work very well but keep in mind that the repeater must have an antenna that talks and listens to the cell site, so if you can't get reception with your phone, then the repeater antenna will need to be somewhere other than where you are, like on the roof. Now the antenna for the repeater can be, and should be, a highly directional antenna so it can be pointed where it needs to be to talk to the cell site. Where as the antenna on the repeater that talks to your cell phone will be non directional because you will move around and need to talk to the repeater from numerous locations in your house and yard. To get where you need to go, you really need to do a signal survey for different cell carriers to determine how to solve your reception problem. With a lot of searching, you can find out the locations of the sites that the cell carriers use.
finding out from a carrier where their tower is like top secret info. the funny part is i have a tower 200' from my backyard,no one seems to know who it belongs to.
if i could find out whose tower i would try their service.

Have you tried searching with the FCC or some similar site?I've found a lot of information is public on towers that are over 100' or so.Try something like this:http://www.city-data.com/towers/cell-Hays-Kansas.html

Not really top secret but you are correct, they don't like to talk about it. It is actually public information and you can get some help by looking up FCC data, tower permits etc. If you talk to someone who is in the business of installing repeater systems, they have all the data necessary.Nobody gets in to see the wizard...not nobody...not no how!
Go here and put in your address, to find out who that tower belongs to.http://www.antennasearch.com/..I'm not worried, I'm curious...You are always welcome at Quittintime
I'd rather have a root canal without the shot too.
The good news is that you have 30 days to return the cell and kill the contract if you don't get good reception/results.
With that said, I'm sure there is some fine print that requires you to deliver your firstborn to opt out during that "trial period'.
Don't do: Cingular, Verizon, T Mobile, or Nextell. Or sprint. Or att. Other than that, you're okay.

i also have a cricket it's pretty much local with unlimited everything for 32.00. it is without a doubt the best i have ever had for here in town. problem is getting out on the road it gets a little expensive. other than that i would recomend it .the older i get ,
