apron?

CAGIV | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 7, 2003 07:21am

anybody use this or something similar?

I finally broke down and was going to order another bucket boss since the one I have is packed to gills and to heavy and I saw if I spend 25 I get free shipping so started looking and thought it might be nice for times a whole tool belt isnt necessary.

Any thoughts good or bad before I spend 15 bucks to save 5?

That depends on what you do. Aprons are great for in shop work, cabinet work, light electrical, but I wouldn't get caught dead showing up at a jobsite with one of those things on. Norm Abram "Yankee workshop" would look at home in an apron, I have no idea why he wears that cheezy Craftsman tool belt with the tape in front.

Well I was looking for something I could buy that was fairly cheap that I could  get me over the hump of $25 to avoid shipping cost, I figure I would rather spend another 10-20 bucks and get something then pay 5 bucks for shipping.

The apron would definetly be the cause of a few job site jokes, but there are times I wish I could carry a few tools such as tape, small pry bar, maybe a screw driver and square but not the whole belt.

Guess I have to find something else to spend a few bucks on, the apron doesnt seem like a good choice.

So if you had to spend 10-20 bucks on a tool, what would it be, that you dont already have a few of?

I have a smaller "waist only" version (no bib) that I wear when I don't need my big tool pouch. Like you said, Tape, square, pencil, etc... just 3 pockets, made out of black canvas.

I do tend to only wear it around the shop or house though, when everything is easy access at the saw / at a work station / in the room I'm working.

I think I found it on the clearance table at HD or Lowe's for $3 to $5 one year after Christmas.

I wear one of those on "love night" to hold the spatulas I use to give my wife the "Aunt Jemima treatment". You might want to wear pants with yours around the job site, though.

I have that apron and have a couple of problems with it.

First I am short (5-6) and with the neck strap adjusted as short as I can and still get it over my head it hangs just a little too low.

I bought it for shop use, but have not gotten around to using it that way.

But I was working on a friends house putting some trim up and so I had the front pockets full of 3 different size finish nails. Then I did not have a place for the tape. If I put it in the 2nd row of pockets it blocked access to one of the nail pockets. And it got in my way when I was doing baseboards.

I wanted to carry a rasp and couple of other little things, but did not have room for them.

This probably won't fit your needs, but I really love it. It is the "rear guard", but it will fit on a regular pants belt. I use it when I am doing electrical work or other hardware work.

They also have this layout scabbard, but you still don't have any place for a hammer and nails.

BB makes a cheap home owners belt that you probably work for you , but TC does not carry it.

Also you might want to check around locally. In Olathe there is a factory discount mall (Mid America Mall I THINK, right off I-35). They had a Black and Decker factory outlet and a gadget store with some "TV tools". But they also had some BB stuff at about 2/3 price. But I think I saw in the paper that both stores have just closed.

But I know that there used to be two outlet malls in Larwance. You might see what they have. And let me know if there are any tool/hardware type of stores there. It have been a number of years since I went over there.

Thank you that rear gaurd looks like a good option.  Carry a few things when I dont need the belt but also help out when I need more room then my belt can handle.

Both of the outlet malls in Lawrence are DOA.

The one downtown is now a hotel, and a darned nice one. The one out by I-70 is just empty.

The mall you are thinking of in Olathe is the Great Mall of the Great Plains. I haven't been there recently enough to know what they have for tool stores. I know there was a DeWalt, or B&D outlet a couple of years ago.

I sometimes use carpenter's apron similar to the one CAG is asking about, but it's cotton, and the strap/waist ties are integrated. The straps cross on your back, and then thread through a grommet at the waist, and tie together in the back.

The reason this makes a difference is that with this arrangement, there's no weight on the back of your neck. The straps end up in a suspenders-like arrangement.

IMHO the Bucket Boss would kill me, because whatever weight there was in it would be hanging around youre neck.

    CAG,

Yes.  I have used that for about four years now, maybe more.  I do a customizing job on them (make that wife does).  I have her hook the straps together in the back (like suspenders (better balance).  She customizes the pencil pockets.

I add a electrical tape holder like the big boys from the electrical co.  I make a special place in the nylon strap for my MAGNETIC TAPE HOLDER.

The other thing that "bugged" me was that it was hard to put the hammer in the holder without careful attention and patience.  Rather than develop patience I got a standard leather hammer hoop set up and I hook it on with ONE HOG RING which I remove for washing.

I have two of these aprons which makes the switch easier for washing.
