I have never installed anything but 3 tab asphalt shingles – years ago, but in looking at my present home, which has architectural shingles, and in chasing a few leaks I wonder if they are harder mentally to install, as I have seen roofing nails BETWEEN the ends of the shingles and also if you lift the lower outside part of the shingle up (like lifting up a 3 tab “end” tab, i see a nail about an inch in from the end, too close to leak country.
Are the arch shingles harder mentally to install?? MAybe it was a hot day on my house.

In my opinion, they are easier--you don't have to worry about the tabs lining up, since there aren't any. They are heavier, I suppose, and stiffer, but I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I don't know about nailing an inch from the edge causing leaks. I'd say I nail pretty close to that distance when I nail them. The butts should be covered by the next shingle above, so I can't see the problem.
Way easier to install dimensionals.

When installing Archys on a California valley of yer own house, one can do like MisterT does and drink a bunch of coffee to get the OCD going real good
then plan the valley shingle layout and cuts so the double layered areas of each shingle will be directly in the crevice of the valley where the water run gathers and provide an extra umph of durability.
At least that's what he said anyhow, sounded good when he told me but MisterT can spin a pretty good yarn at times.

That aimless drifter driveth a minimommyvan
Nah - it's a full size mommyvan. And it's getting a little long in the tooth. Let's see - It's been up to your little paradise, Tipifest, Northfest, and Peachfest among other cross country jaunts.
Many know the mommyvan. Some giggle nervously and some tremble when they see it on the horizon. But just like a trainwreck, they can't look away until they see who's riding shotgun: Gunner or the fearsome DW.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Daughter of mine inherited our minivan,so it is a dog carrier now. # of miles on it means good thing her Beau is a mechanic

Ours MV has been dating the mechanic a little too much lately. We'll probably keep it for a while. DD has her permit and will probably get a car in a year or so which will cut down on the amount of miles put on the MV dramatically. We'll no longer be hauling 6 cheerleaders or basketball players or something everywhere we go.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
they are easier to install--- but you described a seriously mis-nailed shingle.
when you nail one--- you have a nail within an inch of each outside edge---and then the other nails must be approx. 12 inches in from the edge----- that allows the offset to develop and the butt joint of the overlapping shingles to land 6 inches away from any nail
if you lifted the lower corner of a dimensional shingle--and found a nail an inch away--ESPECIALLY near a valley---- there is a high probability of a leak developing in that area

Easier unless there is a lot of cutting
