I have a customer that wants shake vinyl siding on his front porch gable . The front door is arched so the gable is arched to match. The siding is a dark gray. What would be anyone’s suggestion for an arched channel. The rubber j-channel will not work here.

Why not?
If necesary I would fabricate somthing out of Azak.
The rubber j- channel is not wide enough for shake vinyl and it is white. I have thought about having an arch made out of kdat lumber with a notch cut on top to accept the vinyl. The arch would also have to accept the vinyl on the bottom of the arch which is 12" wide. I had a millwork guy look at it and he said it would not be a problem to make something . I would have to paint it.

What about heating up a composite product? And then flash as needed?
I'm not sure I would know how to do that. This is the front of the house. It has to look good.
I am actually trying to fix some mistakes on this house. This was a mistake. They should have thought this through a little better. Somebody else started this and quit. I can see why. They probably did not know how to finish and make everything look like it belongs there.
I have put shake vinyl on arched windows and doors but I had some pvc 1x4 made to the arch and them spaced it out from the wall enough to make a channel for the vinyl. That works great but this is a totally different application.

check a good siding supplier, flex J comes in other colors & is wide enough for shakes been there done that!
Good Luck
I always though the channel cheapened the end look of the product... They do make cellular PVC 4x8(10,12) and you could cut the trim piece out of that. I Meant composite as in PVC trim not decking.
half round window trim vinyl siding
we just use flex-j around half round windows and then cover them with an aluminum cap matching the other window trim. The web has places you can purchase an aluminum half round window cap for vinyl siding if your contractor does not wish to make one

aluminum half round window cap for vinyl siding
Do you know of a good source for aluminum half round window caps. We just had siding put on the house and they used the flex-j around the half round windows. I really think it would look much better covered like you suggest. Thanks!
flex-j or rubber j-channel
The same concept of the aluminum half round window trim is used in place of flex-j for our installers. We flash the bottom of the wall area with a "L" notched about every inch to create the curvature and seal it off. Then we apply the siding or shake with no face on the flashing. This makes it more accuate for the arch angle. Then we apply a good bead of sealant under the "L" and apply a "Half Round Window Trim" piece to face out the wall. Depending on the size of the gable, the face trim may be 1" to 3 1/2" to keep the smooth appearance. We only use flex-J where it can be covered and hidden as it is white, usually dingy looking, and ugly.
