Just looking for opinion…
We are about to do a major addition on our own home, and I debating engineered wood joists (i.e. “i-beam”) vs. traditional lumber joists. What if the bathroom (for instance) has a major water problem, and the OSB web in the joists gets wet (or stays wet from a small leak). Could the joist fail?
This is one of those new “wonder products” that, in my opinion, hasn’t had enough years testing in real-life situations to make me feel 100% comfortable. I can see all these new homes in 20-30 years suddenly all needing major re-work, with the accompanying lawsuits, etc. I know these have been around since the 70s. Anybody have any long-term experience with them?
