I mostly stick with my Playstation 2. I'm looking forward to play Tony Hawk Underground this weekend. NBA Live 04 is on tap for tonight.
I was an "early adopter" for id products. I've been sore tempted by the newest Wolfenstein, but have not executed. My Doom installs don't like running on the Pentium, so that has slowed play (not on the laptop, though).
Road Rash & Top Shot are good stress relievers. So's Seawolf (graduated up from 688).
But, when I really need to get away, it's MS Flight Simulator. Can be a bit of fun, buzzing town in a Corsair, or a Harrier. Touch-and-goes with a C-17 on a short muni field take some practice, and care, too.
But, mostly, I chatter in fora <grin> . . .
Ditto on Flight Simulator. Pacific Theater. Force Feedback Pro stick.
Flies like a dream.
Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.
Force Feedback Pro stick
Cool, next stick will be the Logitech Feedback, my Wingman Extreme is good, but FS 2002 has a better feedback software--very handy for pushing a Mooney over in a hammerhead stall.
Combat Sim has caught my eye a time or two, but I'm flying to relieve stress, and somehow, that just doesn't equal "arrested" landings <grin>Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
I have a mix that I like to play, the mechwarrior series are fun, but then I also enjoy Sim City 3000 and Oil Tycoon. I have Rocky Mountin Trophy Hunter, but find it to be so unrealistic that I can't enjoy it.TCW Specialists in Custom Remodeling.
Turn based strategy, or TBS with real time components, works for me.
I try them, and sometimes return every few months, but most RTS seems too frenetic to me. First person is far too twitchy. The internet arenas far too filled with cybergeeks who live the game and base their manhoods, what little they have, on their winning. Often they openly cheat or exploit the system shamelessly.
I like Civilization 3 and Medieval Total War. The later has a real-time component for battles but a TBS base. Civ3 is the game I play the most of. With the PTW add on, it allows playing against human players over a network or internet. It is fun if you find opponents that meet your style but a relaxing game against the computer, no slouch on higher levels but no time limits, is more my style. In difficult situations I can take a break, get some coffee, maybe a bite to eat, go for a walk and return refreshed. Sometimes after a week or two.
4Lorn,
I had a couple bad game experiences with them messing up my PC many years ago and Joe Stoddard and others still recommend never loading a game onto a businmess PC because of that possibility.
But I have been tempted with that civilization Game. Seems to be a thinking man's game. Is it stable?.
Excellence is its own reward!
I have found that Civ3, or Civ2 for that matter, to be highly stable. Those few coding flaws messed with the game itself not the overall system stability. As far as I have seen, after many hours on each game all issues have been effectively patched but here again these were mostly just performance, graphics or game balance and play issues within the game. Worse case both have effective delete, self-removal, functions.
To get the best performance you will want to make sure your drivers are up to date, disk defragmented and registry clean. Same with any software. Down loading the game patches, fortunately these are inclusive of all previous patches so you only need to down load one per game, before you install is a good idea but unlike some software, where you need the patch to get it to run, not essential.
If your a Turn Based Strategy (TBS) veteran and well understand the game concepts either Civ2 or Civ3 are doable. If not I would suggest getting Civ2. This is a slightly less detailed game that has many entertaining touches, like Elvis as you social counsellor and a besotted military advisor when your winning a lot of battles. It is a classic that can often be found for around $10. Looked on Amazon.com and see the Gold edition for around $5. Well worth every penny.
Be sure to find an edition that supports your OS. This would be the single largest reason to start with Civ3 as it is fully XP compatible. I have two machines one with Win98 that runs Civ2 very well, I hear it is compatible with XP, especially if you run it in "compatibility mode" , and a XP machine that I have Civ3 on. You might dig around any of the Civ sites, manufacturers and fan sites, to check compatibility.
If you are a bold sort, or after some experience Civ3 and the added Play The World (PTW) expansion will make more sense. Both games are based on simple but manifold concepts. It is a balancing act where simple decisions have profound consequences many turns later.
WARNING: If you get fully into these games you, or anyone, are likely to fall in, become addicted and loose touch with everything else. At least for a time. Starting a game after dinner and seeing the first rays of the sun ten hours later seem to follow each other naturally. For a time friends, bathing, eating and work became secondary to the "just one more turn" addiction.
Thanks,
That final warning reminds me of my college days and some pretty spectacular RISK tourneys.
All of you who are into Freecell, what kind of average do you run in statistics? I do about 64% when I'm paying attention and 56% when I'm just wasting time and not focusing..
Excellence is its own reward!
It occurred to me that you could set up a second, or third, partition on your HD and have another OS. This would keep any games pretty well segregated from the work.
This, partitioning and dual booting, has its very special issues and problems. Some of these can be catastrophic so be sure to back up all your important files. This later part is a good idea before adding any software to a machine containing hard to replace data. But you already knew that.
FreeCell statistics:
Total: 91%
Won: 8906
Lost: 926
Streaks:
Wins: 119
Losses: 4
Current: 7
Can't believe I lost four in a row once.
If I'm paying attention, I always win.

Man I thought I was the only one that played that game and kept track of the W/L thing.
When we got a new computer a year ago I had over 10,000 games on the old one. Now I play a timed game, no dicking around.
Doug
Rick,
how about some tips on thinking and strategizing? Any tricks? What do you focus on first?
I remember the first time i was exposed to the game with real cards. After three tries, I gave it up as an impossible game for masochists.
;).

Tips?? Hmmm...
For me, the big no no is if I start moving cards without a reason. If I lose concentration and begin by moving a few cards without really thinking about it, I will lose a lot of those games.
So...don't move cards without a reason.
I try to avoid putting a card in a free cell unless I know how I'm getting it back out.
As one might think, I start with trying to get all of the aces out. I like to figure which ace will be the most difficult and do it first if I can find a way. Once the aces are out, I try to get out all of the twos, then the threes, etc. I avoid building up one of the aces too far ahead of the others (but sometimes there is no choice).
Sometimes, right from the start, I can't find any moves that seem to go anywhere at all. There have been a few games where the only moves didn't look productive, but ended up working.
Once in awhile I can't see the necessary moves, and I'll leave it for awhile. When I come back, the next move is obvious.
If I had to play timed games, I think I would probably be winning 80% (but maybe less).
Of course, sometimes I ignore all of the above and still win.
Sorry if the above isn't helpful.

Time to dump the federal Dept. of Education
Very, especialy about not using the free cells unless you have a strategy for unloading them again. I have tried to play myself witha rule to always keep two free cells open. sounds like you aim for four.
I also look for using aces and doing it evenly.
What I really like is to be able to - on the first set of moves - rearrange a single column to have king stacked . In other words, the find the column that can be unloaded and reloaded in proper order, preferably from king base.
Sounds like we play same but I need to focus on kleeping more free cells open which will foirce me to think further ahead..

I have a friend who has free-cell on some disk of games that he bought, he has the option of having as many as 7 free-cells at the top, he still cant win more than 25% of the time, and then its just dumb luck.
Doug
"he has the option of having as many as 7 free-cells at the top, he still cant win more than 25% of the time"
Geez, I bet I'd have 99% wins if I had five free cells at the top (and I'd be kicking myself over the careless stupidity that cost me the 1%).
Piffen,
As a pure exercise in ego gratification, I think I'm going to log my moves for a few games, with comments on what I'm doing. If you want I will e-mail you the logs.

Sure, if it won't distract you from the play too much. I get to learn from looking over your shoulder plus I can say that I helped gratify someone this week, LOL.

I also manage to fit in a game of Freecell sometimes when I'm waiting for the dial up ISP to send my comments or load the thread.

Freecell...my only addiction...
My daughter and I are looking forward to the next "Myst" chapter. It's a great thinking game to play with your kids. Surprises around every corner. A really fun one from a while back is "The Neverhood".
Brad's Freecell record was 55 games won in a row. He has too much time on his hands! He will also sit and play "Dune Emperor" (a strategy game), for 4 or 5 hours a night...at least it's not internet porn!

I run civ2 and civ call to power on a celeron 333. It's the same computer that I have autocad 2002 on. I do have 256 ram and windows ME, but those have been my only upgrades. I have not had any issues running any of the programs by themselves. I did try to run civ2 and cad 2000 one time, but after spending the next 30 min. getting my stuff back, I don't reccommend it. I had to try it once. I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too.
How do you compare Civ2 to Call to Power (CTP)? Have you tried Civ3?
I was disappointed by CTP. It lacked a soul. They seemed to have built a game and left out the fun. I think it was rushed to market and lacked the loving care that Cid Meyer lavished upon Civ and Civ2.
Civ3 is, IMHO, the next logical step from Civ2 but it has a pretty steep learning curve for any who are not TBS aficionados. Not too bad if you cut your teeth playing Civ or Civ2 but I have had more than a few people give up, or nearly so, before mastering the intricacies.
If you want Civ3 get the "Gold Pack" as it includes both Civ3 and Play the World (PTW) it both adds a few civilizations, fine tunes some issues and adds head to head internet and net play. I was in a local Best Buy and found that Civ3 and the Gold pack were priced the same so getting the pack saves a bit of money.
I played civ 3 once for about a week at a friends house. I have been meaning to buy it but haven't gotten around to it. As far as CTP is concerned I like the graphics, but actually have more fun with civ 2 which I still play every now and then just to see how long that it takes to conquer the world in the WWII scenario. I guess it may be a hidden desire to be supreme leader.
Have any of you tried the free poker games at http://www.pokerstars.com They have tables where you can play for real or play money.
Maybe we could start a breaktime poker game if any of you are interested.

ROFLMAO!!! That's funny.
The only game I play much of is FreeCell. I play it a lot.
I played Myst when it came out and I played the sequel, Riven. I purchased the third installment on a sale rack for $6, but it doesn't run on my ancient machine, so it waits.
Years ago, on the Amiga, I played a lot of Tetrus, Populous, and Lemmings. Also, a flight game where you flew British fighters defending the homeland in WWII against German bombers and fighters. I never got too good at that.

Wow, never even thought about Freecell. Probably because it's down in my Tray as the default "I'm waiting on "xxx" to "yyy" time waster <grin>.
Xbox live. Thinking about getting Halo PC.
