Asphalt Driveway Apron -paver necessary?
We need to put in an apron off the road at the end of our lane. The county wants it done this month or they’ll pursue legal action.
Its only 300 s.f., and we’d do concrete, but we prefer asphalt for this, just no experience with the material.
One plan is to dump a load of asphalt, rake it even, then run a rented roller over it. Another plan is to call a paving company…
It sounds simple, but we don’t want it to look like….well, you know. Can it be done? Tips? Caveats?

Been there, done that.To the OP. First thing is is verify with the county if they have any engineer specs. They might want a culber put in. And do curbs need to be cut? etc, etc..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
yes you can do it... the main deal with asphalt is the base... it needs to be compacted and smooth... the better your base the better your finished produce... geo makes a fabric which good also... but even a lawn type weed... or a french drain type fabric is good also...
how far from the asphalt plant? hotter the mix the less work you'll do...
yes you can rake it out by hand and compact it... you can even use a plate compactor... i use one for patches all the time you only want to rake out about 1" at a time compact then another layer...
hard AZZ hot nasty work.... and you can do concrete for the same price if you are doing the labor... if you want it black... seal coat it after or put black color in it...
i know with my own dump truck... bobcat... 4-6ton roller... and no laydown machine i can work my azz off get an ok finished product... for the same $$ as if i'd hired a pro...
if i had a laydown mach/paver i would do my own asphalt work... weird that way i just like mess'n with it...
