I purchased a new home(new to me) and the first two rows of shingles on the house have been chipped off. Someone was probably trying to break the ice jam in the gutter and ripped off the shingles(and the gutter) in the process. What is the best method for replacing the first two rows of shingles?

*Install an ice guard underlayment while your at it.
*if you have symptoms of ice damming such as busted or chopped shingles. You might want to check out the root cause of the problem. Is the soffit properly vented and allowing airflow to roof vents, to be exhausted. Ice dams usually occur because the overhang protion of the roof is colder than the higher portion of the roof over the house. Ensuring proper airflow will reduce the risk of ice damming Mike Galt Ontario Canada
*You should contact a good friend who knows all about these kind of problems and has done this before and have him do it for you
*I second Tim's advice! It seems so simple to just replace acouple of rows of shingles that it's tempting to do it yourself. Maybe you can but when you start out by asking how to, I think you really don't understand the problem. Two approaches will work, simple and cheap. Simple is call a couple of roofing contractors in and write the check. (don't take the cheapest bid!!) Cheap, Go to the library and get some books about roofing. Read some of the posts in the archievs about ice dams, realize that what you are actually dealing with is not stopping rain water from falling inside the house but instead you're trying to keep ice from creeping under shingles!
