Any carpet layers out here, or trimmers who can give me a standard on how high above subfloor they usually set base if it has no shoe. What would carpet men LIKE to see. Floor will be berber carpet with pad. Base will have no shoe, or 1/4 round. H. O. wants base before carpet installed. I’m thinking 1/2″-3/4″, but am being told should be more. What are your standards.
Thanks

berber doesn't come up as high as pile carpet. Butt end of a shim-heavy 3/8's. Or with cheap base use its thickness, again a heavy 3/8's.

Thanks Calvin,
3/8 doesn't't't sound like much, but I will take your word for it. Just wondering but how does the tack strip get placed? !/2 out from base, or from wall, or ?? I won't install this just curious.
Thanks.

You'll probably find the standard is what Calvin said, 3/8 to 1/2. It doesn't sound like much, but the better carpet installers rely on better cutting techniques than tucking the carpet anyway.
Some gap is necessary, but anything over 1/2 is too much, pretty much whatever style of base you use.Quality, Craftsmanship, Detail
The tack is just in front of the base. They take their wide chisel and bash the carpet down into the space between the base and floor (after they scrape the #### outta the base-or not depending on how good/careful they are). Trust me, you go higher and when there's that bit of run where you're a 1/2 or more above, it'll show dark, not a gap......but it comes close. Even with a thick pad, the rug is still only the thickness of the rug/tackstrip at that point. If you use 3" base it won't get buried and look goofy. 3/4 up and you could throw a cat through it. Healthy 3/8's
Course, this from a dumb carpenter.

3/8"
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
If you are installing trim, rip some pieces of 3/8" plywood shims. Make them 2" or so by say 3", or slightly bigger and you can put them into corners so they hold up both trim lengths.
That's how I do it.

Ditto to Mad Dog, We usually just use some 3-8 or 7-16 scrap and every guy has some in his pouch. Depending of course on carpet. After the carpet layers scratch the ---- out of it we mix varnish and thinner and give a quick coat around the perimeter of the room.

Thanks for the help. 3/8 it is. I knew I could count on you folks for a quick answer.
