I installed a new Braun bath fan. used 3″ well insulated PVC slightly sloped toward the vent on gable east side of the house. For the external vent all I find locally is cheap plastic triple louvers which freeze shut in even above zero weather, and it gets -40F here in Jan. Suggestions?
Thanks

Aluminum wall vent. Should heat up quicker than the plastic. And it doesn't have as many indiv. contacts points as the multi louvre. Should be able to find something with a small "spring" to keep it shut when not in use.
How long is the run?

18' run.
Got a name for the aluminum vent so I can search online to get a look?
thanks
Broan sells them. Deflecto is one of the makers. Here's a link from some online supplier (might be deflecto's)

Just run the fan. Enough air gets through that it'll melt the ice in under 5 minutes in most cases.
Last time we tried it, it was only -20F and a half hour fanning didn't open it up, and this was with only a tub saok, no shower, was happening, & bath door was open.
I will call Braun and see what they say, and ask about their aluminum down draft one. thanks
3", 18' run, it ain't never going to work, you need to shorten the run, pump up the volume ..
18 feet is probably OK if it's solid aluminum duct. Hopeless if it's the stretch stuff, however.

I always used a thin rigid PVC ducting. Came in longer lengths, less joints, and like aluminum (seam up I assume if it has one) it never was bothered by any moisture and conducted no heat (in or out). Why the thumbsup on aluminum? Tyr
it's illeagle here...

Yeah, PVC should be fine too. Al is more "normal". The thing to avoid on long runs is the corrugated carp.

Probably right on the "normal". I usually kick things up a notch from normal. When I was still subbing the contractor I worked for hated any job in the City of Denver. Name was Bob. After his last round of complaints about "D" I asked why? Because they adhere to the building code too much was the reply. So I said to him that code was minimal requirement...did he want the name of "Minimal Bob"?That was the last I did any work for "Minimal Bob". So with my experience and a lot of study I tested out to be a licensed Supervisor of Contractors. Decided to always kick things up over code. Tyr
It's important to remember to turn the fan on before you start making humidity, and to leave it on 10 minutes or so after the room is vacated. Also, make sure the internal damper of the fan is working well so that humid air doesn't creep into the duct when the fan is off.We have ours freeze occasionally, but it's pretty rare. Since it's on the front of the house we just have the plastic vane style vent.
