Best BT Advise/Words of wisdom

ToolFreakBlue | Posted in General Discussion on February 16, 2008 06:06am

Similar to Quotable Quotes what tidbit have you picked up at Breaktime that you use regularly.

For Instance

Jeff Buck – ‘Never go back to the truck empty handed’ paraphrased, I think he got it from his dad or brother. I have not searched for it but I think it was at least 5 years ago. To this day I try to find something to carry back to the truck to not waste a trip. Thanks Jeff.

anybody else?

    Good idea.

But maybe a word of caution to everyone...

If this thread doesn't stay focused on advice for work... This thread is liable to end up co-habitating the tavern with the other quotes thread.

Yeah, it may be cold, but at least it's a wet cold !

Ooops, you said co-habitating. This one's headed to the Tavern ! ;^) Greg

As I walk through the job site I am always thinking about that--redistributing things so I'm seldom walking around empty handed.

I've also found it is easier to carry two five gallon buckets, one in each hand, that it is to carry one in one hand.

Two pry bars work better than one--open the seam with one and put the second in and pry a bit, move the first one just beyond the second (like leap frog) and so on. Have also found that when removing flooring, the best tool is a mattock--again, works best in a pair. With two, the load is distributed and the flooring comes up in big pieces. Same idea of load distribution works well when using flat bars to remove old drywall.

If you get low on pens, pencils, key chains, thumb drives and mini-flashlights, go to a job fair.

I picked up coping with a grinder here...probably from Doug U.

Bought a Fein MM based on propaganda spouted by MM cult members...now I iz one.

On carrying things back to the truck throughout the day...I avoid making any extra trips out there...bring in everything you need at the beginning...and I also avoid carrying things--man invented the wheel so he did not have to carry things.

I load all my tools on my wheeled cart at the start of the day...wheel it in...work...wheel it back out at the end of the day. Every extra trip back out to the truck is wasted time and energy.

    from the venerable Mike Smith

"you can't paint an unpaintable surface"  is one of my favorites.

Also, one that is trivial but has been helpful is when doing roof repairs on asphalt shingles on a hot day, lay a piece of foam padding down to kneel on to save destroying the shingles

    From Diesel:
"I always tell myself when I lose a job, that I didn't lose it because my price was too high.... I lost it because someone else's price was too low"

Or when the customer asks you to reduce your price because they don't think they should pay that much, you ask them if when they go to the grocery store and get 5 bags of groceries, do they tell the cashier that they are taking 5 bags but are only going to pay for 3?

a guy named Barry Miller told me this here on Breaktime, circa 1998

" stephen---you will have a lot less trouble if you don't insist on  having the last word"

so true-- and since then, I notice EVERY time I get involved in some stupid argument here---- it's because i failed to follow Barry Millers advice on this.

On the debate of sealed crawl spaces. Someone said something very smart. Don't think of them as crawl spaces, think of them as small basements. Would you leave your basement windows open in the winter.
