I’m building a log sided home this spring and am wondering what to use for sheathing under the 2×6 log siding. OSB seems like overkill to me. I want to use something a little lighter but not neccessarily r-board. Has anyone used that Johns-Mansville fiber board? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. Jeff

Hi Jeff, The last home I sided in log siding had some walls sheathed in 7/16" OSB and some were just R-board. In either case we still had to make sure nail placement was on studs. Our siding we put up was tongue and groove and had to be blind nailed. We did have some problem going over the R-board as it had a tendency to compress when nailing the siding to it which would show up in the outside of the siding looking wavy in places. The framing contractor told the builder he did not recommend us applying the siding over the R-board only, but it did not change his mind. The owner has noticed the problem, and unlike what the contractor told him it has not straightened itself out in time. Haven't heard for sure yet, but we may be hired to R&R some siding. MDM.
