Best way to remove rust from bathtub?
I just removed the ‘protective’ plastic liner from a new tub and found a couple of drywall screws had been underneath. They left a few noticeable rust stains on the new tub (Kohler cast iron – white). I have tried CLR, Iron Out, etc., and nothing seems to work. I read the label on naval jelly, and found that it is intended for metal. I also thought phosphoric acid may work. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Try Bar Keeper's Friend.
Or, I assume even better, Bar Keeper's Friend Lime and Rust Remover (though I've never seen that product in a store).

Yep, Barkeeper's Friend. Or an oxalic acid solution.
Like the other guys said, BKF would work. I used to have rusty well water, and I would use BonAmi on my dishes occasionally to get the rust off. Amazingly, it doesn't take much elbow grease either.

Bar keeper's friend, or comet, one or the other.
But don't rub it in.
Get the area wet, and sprinkle the comet on liberally. Let it form a wet paste, and let it sit there.
Rinse and repeat as necessary. It WILL eventually remove the stain, that way.
naval jelly's active ingredient IS phosphoric acid. The jelly base helps hold it in contact where you want it.

Do NOT get any navel jelly... On your navel.Hey, wait a minnit, that's a good post for Cloud Hidden's "wisdom" thread...;o)
Yeh... That'll work.
Phosphoric will work, but it might etch the new enamel, might not, but I wouldn't take a chance. There's a product called Whink Rust Stain remover that is amazing stuff. Just a squirt and the rust stains disappear in about two seconds, it's almost scary. Not sure what the active material is but it works very well.
Yep - I vote for Whink Rust Stain Remover. I tried a zillion products to remove rust from a sink. Whink did the trick.
Have used muriatic acid extensively to remove rust stains from fiberglass boat hulls - no harm to FG - do not know about tub enamel. Large scale work, mop on, work your way around the boat, when you get back to where you started, start rinsing - nice and white. Would use the cheapest sponge mop we could buy - first dip into the bucket would sizzle as the galvanization dissappeared from the mop.
Have used Chlorox Clean Up spray cleaner on Kohler, white, CI, kitchen sink to remove the tiny rust stains from steel wool bits left in sink. Small, light stains - don't know how it would do with a big heavy stain though.
Both products - spray or wipe on - wait until stain fades away - rinse well with water. Repeat if needed. You can rub if you want, but it is the chemical action that does the work - gives you something to do while the chemistry works. Suggest gloves with either product.
Good luck!

Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
I use toilet bowl cleaner. I read the labels at the hardware store and the only one who listed phosporic acid as an ingrediant was the Ace brand. like others said you might have to re-apply it several times. I let it sit for a while rinse off with water and re-apply until the stain is gone.
Try one of those Mr. Clean magic erasers, they work quite well. Roger
