am not impressed with the quality of install-it-yourself deadbolts I see in hardware stores; anyone know a source for a better-made product?

We used to use Best Locks (Best is the brand name) at the bank. Heavy duty, interchangeable cores, a little expensive. Falcon seems to be pretty good also.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Medeco is what I used to use for high quality locks. Their keys have cuts at odd angles, which makes them far more difficult to pick.

medco makes good locks.
Question for you, do you reinforce the doors and door fame? Do you remove all glass with in 4 feet of the door and 6 feet off the ground? If not why buy any thing more expensive then the lock from Kmart?
