Since your covering it with 1x, why don't you just nail it? I'm sure your not going to just cover just one side of the beam, are you?
Even if you were to do that you can nail two together first and then put the third one on top of the double covering the heads of the nails and then the 1x will cover the nails on the third 2x8 and the other side you wont see any nails.
yea maybe i will cover both sides with 1xs,just so i'll have a nice flush look.but i was worried about the seams coming apart if i used nailes. but i know one thing i'm going to use colonial posts. i just priced them at lowes, the price is not bad at all.but the one thing that got me psssd off was they don't sell 3 tab shingles anymore. the guy said they have to be special ordered,it will take 14 days to come in.my concern is a roof is a very important part of a house.and people still have 3 tabs on there house.lowes has plenty of room outback where the could store them.the guy said theres no charge to special order them.but there the same price as the arcuetectual ones,go figure.
No you can't. The surfaces are not flat enough for any adhesive bond that would be structurally sufficient.
I'm scratching my head a bit as to why you want to avoid using nails. If you were to glue it up with no exposed fasteners whatsoever, #1, it's still a hunk of PT and will always look like a hunk of PT unless you wrap it and #2, you'll still have butt joints where the pieces meet which isn't exactly attractive either. Bunch of exposed nails won't detract much from a hunk of PT with butt joints in it.
Maybe nail it up, wrap it in something nice (teak or ipe), call it good.

I thought this discussion was about Jim Beam bonded whiskey.
Like others said, screws, etc.
Ring shank nails wont move unless you are in an earthquake area- glue does not add any strength at all in your application.
For minimal movement for appearance, carraige bolt under the facings.
No profile info, if you happen to be in Seattle area, stop by and I'll give you a bucket of bolts.
