Boxing Detail

I am building a detached garage next to our old farm house and I am trying to copy the details on the old house. Underneath the boxing there are fake joist spaced about every two feet. They are 3″ x 3 1I2″ x 12″ and Iave a scroll cut on one end. My question is what would be the best wood to use to make the new ones? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
