Any ideas on drilling out a broken dowl and replaceing so it lines up short of drilling through from the back side and driving it stright through. The last time I trided to drill both ends out from where they joined I ended up with a horrable mis- match. Is there a tool to matain this alinement ?

Hey Don,
Just poppin` in to redirect you.
You`ve placed this thread in a folder not likely to get the attention you`re in need of. You might want to try reposting in the "General" folder, or even "Construction Techniques".
Better yet.....the "Knots" forum is targeted at woodworkers/furniture makers.
We`re more a bunch of thumbsmashers round here.
Good luck to ya though.

and here I thought it was Tipifest renamed to Brokenchair (like brokenarrow)The secret of Zen in two words is, "Not always so"!

I have had some success by cuttint the broken end of chair legs at the shoulder, or disk sanding them as square as possible. If the break is real jagged I tape around it and fill the end with bondo, just to get everything squared up. With the leg end having a temporary flat end, I can then drill it out to accept as large a diameter dowel that leave a reasonable shoulder on the leg.
For the seat, I sand and bondo smooth the socket to get a flat plane to start the drill bit. Match the bit to the dowel size and either use a stop collar or a tape to set the depth. On through bored seats, you want to stop a least 1/4" from drilling the old leg tennon all the way out. Then clean as much of any remaining bondo off with a burr in a dremel tool or a sharp knife.
I use a two package epoxy from WoodCraft to reassemble everything and use more clamps than I need to hold things in place untill the epoxy cures.
I've only repaired one rocking chair and one cherry Windsor chair this way, and both have become "light duty" seating. The rocker is in its second year at the grade school, and the Windsor seeks shelter in a bedroom durring family visits. It is really just a place holder at the dinning table the rest of the time. I don't know if anyone has acctually set on it in the last four years.

Thanks for the responce. I think I'll toms idea of loosening the old glue to remove the old dowl. This is a very large swivel chair so it needs the best support I can give it.
Thanks
Don
I'm lost. What kind of chair?
This apparently isn't a leg. You have a broken rung, or is this a dowel in the seat support, or a piece of the back? Best method of dowel removal usually is not drilling. Have you tried hot water or steam to loosen the glue? If you remove both ends, without drilling, you only need an appropriate replacement.

Thanks for the idea. This is a large, high swivel chair and it broke where the legs attach to the swivel base. I will try loosening the glue and removing the old dowl, that should solve the alinement problem.
Don
You're welcome. With any luck the maker used chair-appropriate glue. Remember this for your future glue use. Sometimes things need to be taken apart.
If the glue doesn't yield, come back and we'll go into drilling jigs and/or hand scraping. I gather the dowels are the sole attachment for the legs? If so, not much of a design, but apparently it worked until lately.
