Donald,
I suggest you contact Dancing Moose Carpentry in Fort Collins, CO. They are a company which specializes in handcrafting timber framed trusses, stairwells, doorways, etc... I think their phone number is 970-962-0474. Good Luck!

Get Tedd Benson's book. It's great. http://www.bensonwood.com

There are many options depending on the application of the trusses you are going to build. Span, height, snowload, dormers, Exterior finish, building code and material availability just to name a few, sure you can build a timber truss, the thing is applying it to your plans. I'm a Timberframe handcrafter in Central Ontario, hope to hear from you soon and good luck, touch wood. P.S. The timberframer's guild web page has a little info on roof structure in their tools section.
*WHAT ABOUT BUILT UP TRUSSES USING DIMENSIONAL LUMBER SUCH AS 2 X 10'S ETC. THANKS FOR ANY HELP. DONALD
*Donald:You are talking about an enginered truss. Any municipality will require a stamped design prior to building. If you are going to go that route, Teco has (used to at least) an excellent manual (Design Manual fo TECO Timber Connector Construction) on the use of split rings, shear plates, etc. in the construction of built-up trusses. Once engineered, and assuming you are properly set-up, one can fabricate trusses on-site.
