Ok- imagine- I own a 30’s bungalow in N Cal. Today it has a simple landing in front of the front door which is centered under a peak in the roof, with a 4×4 postsupporting the roof. I want to build a stone base and add a second parallel 4×4 column to try and make a Arts and Crafts inspired front porch. I will leave the original 4×4 and build the stone base around it- and then place the second 4×4 with a 3 inch space between them. How do I build the stone base, and how do I transition to the wooden post and how do I handle the trim out? I know how I want it to look- any sources or sites to send me?

Ben , what ever you do don't build the stone base around the post. The mortar and stone will act as a collector and hold moisture against the post and rot it. Build yourself a temporary brace and cut the post off to sit on top of the base. Make sure you put a properly sized footing under the stone and try putting a blue stone or granite cap on it. embed a bolt or rod in the stone cap and drill a corresponding hole in the posts to keep them centered. I don't know about Cal. seismic requirements so check with a local builder about reinforcement and connectors.
*Thanks for your input- appreciate your thoughts on the seismic
