I have seen the term “building paper” used in reference to wrapping a house before the siding goes on(not house wrap). Is “building paper” the same as “building felt” which is used under roofing materials.

Yes Joe,

*You broke the code. Any product beginning with "building" is identical to every other product beginning with "building." This does not apply to "roofing," however.
*Gabe,I thought that building paper is used under siding, not roofing. It is breathable (allows water vapor to pass), stops most air filtration into the structure, and provides a measure of protection against wind-blown rain.As opposed to roofing felt (tarpaper) which is much thicker and is basically waterproof.go easy on mejim
*Hi Jim,I May be wrong but I don't think the poster is refering to anything else other than common felt paper. Since the first roll of felt paper came off the assembly line, it has been used for everything under the sun.Felt or tar paper is not taped at the seams when installed under siding or behind brick etc. so it only directs water away from the interior, down to bottom to the flashing. You may have noticed in previous posts, that I'm not a fan of sealing the outside of the house framing any more than it already is with the plywood. Tyvek or house wrap, is supposed to breath. Regardless of this claim, I would only use it to protect the house until the masonry is completed, otherwise I simply use felt paper over the plywood sheating.Gabe
